Add a New Host to Your NSX-V Deployment

When you add a new host to an existing cluster in your NSX-V environment, a new VM-Series firewall service is deployed on that new host. If you have DRS enabled and to ensure that the no traffic is lost while the VM-Series firewall is coming up, complete the following procedure. You will need to create a temporary cluster to house the new host and disable VMotion until the VM-Series firewall is ready.
  1. Create a temporary cluster and add your new host.
  2. Deploy the VM-Series Firewall service instance on your new host.
  3. Disable vMotion on the virtual switches or distributed switches used by your new host.
    • Virtual Switch
      1. Log in to vCenter Server and select your new host in the inventory.
      2. Select ConfigurationNetworkingVirtual Switch.
      3. Select the virtual switch that includes the VMkernal port group used by your host and click PropertiesPorts.
      4. Select the port group configured for VMotion and click Edit.
      5. On the General tab, uncheck the Enabled check box for VMotion.
      6. Click OK and Close.
    • Distributed Virtual Switch
      1. Log in to vCenter Server and select your new host in the inventory.
      2. Select ConfigurationDistributed Virtual Switch.
      3. Select Manage Virtual Adapters.
      4. Choose the virtual adapter used by your host and click Edit.
      5. Uncheck Use this virtual adapter for VMotion.
      6. Click OK.
  4. Place your new host in maintenance mode.
  5. Move your new host to the existing cluster and exit maintenance mode. Wait for the VM-Series firewall to boot up completely. Because VMotion is disabled on the host, no other virtual machines will be moved to the host by DRS.
  6. When the VM-Series firewall is booted up completely, renable VMotion on the new host. Guest VMs can now move to the new host and security is intact with no traffic lost.
